As remedial learning support is such an underdeveloped field in South Africa still, there is a need for exploration and understanding of some of the basic concepts of remedial learning support required for students with learning barriers, to achieve the national measurements and standards of South African regulation.
The purpose of this course is to increase awareness, knowledge and understanding amongst educators, parents and caregivers, concerning the different developmental, behavioural and environmental learning barriers in early childhood, and in the foundation phase. Furthermore, the purpose of the course is to provide a basic understanding of the nature of remedial learning support and its practical application to the learning situation and classroom setting.
Nikki Swart started off her academic journey at the University of Johannesburg, completing a BA degree in Psychology. Thereafter, she enrolled for the PGCE course, specialising in early childhood and the foundation phase while working at a school for children with autism and other learning disabilities, and specifically working with the ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis) approach.
As the school grew and the need for extended approaches arose, she worked together with other professionals in establishing remedial programmes for the children, eventually taking on the position of the lead therapist for the grade 3 programme. She then began expanding her horizons by getting involved in private therapy and she now does this full-time.
